Our Language Arts at Berkeley International School

The secondary language arts program consists of a challenging and unique curriculum, which integrates both the College and Career Readiness Standards as well as the Common Core State Standards. Created by College Board and based on the 'Understanding by Design' model, the program is vertically aligned from grades 6-9 so that all students benefit from coherence, rigor, and a consistent culture of high standards.

In grade 7 Students understand perspective./ point of view and how it may change or have bias. They write and rewrite simple stories from different points of view. Students present an argument. They initiate an inquiry and conduct research identifying sources. They write an evidence based paper and create a bibliography. They learn what persuade means, identify what adverts are trying to persuade us to do, know how they are trying to persuade us.

They read Oliver Twist reinforcing their understanding of point of view. historical perspective, plays, themes, and characterization. They study use of basic grammar. Engage in role plays They also study literary devices such as exaggeration alliteration,simile metaphor.

Students are encouraged to Initiate inquiry and gather information. they are responsible for taking notes on sources that will help them answer their inquiry questions and define the scope of their investigation. They deepen understanding by analyzing key sources to answer their inquiry questions. Students learn to understand what persuade means and to identify how adverts are trying to persuade us. They learn to understand the features of persuasive writing. They learn how to identify a target audience and how to create a leaflet that will appeal to that market. They learn to understand the assessment task and how to refine a draft completing a professional looking leaflet on the computer and presenting their leaflet in a confident way to the class.
